Two incumbent county officials are not seeking re-election.

County Clerk Paulette Burks and Precinct 2 Commissioner Scott Self have decided it’s time to move on to other options.

“It’s been an ongoing decision for about a year,” Burks said. “I’m 62 years old, been here since ’69. You just come to a point where you decide it’s time to stop and have a little fun. My husband’s been retired for 10 years.”

Burks will serve the remainder of her term, which expires. Dec. 31, 2006. She was appointed county clerk in January 1984 when June Wimpee retired. She had to run for re-election same year for a two-year term.

Burks said she has never had a contested race. Her decision to retire has drawn two candidates so far: Buford Waldrop and Marica M. Gilbert.

The county clerk has worked for Rockwall County since she was hired as a deputy clerk in 1969.

“I had worked in the county clerk’s office and did a little bit of everything. It was small. We still had typewriters,” Burks said. “We typed a lot of birth certificates. We hand wrote marriage licenses. Now they’re all computerized.”

She said she loves the job, which offers a new experience every day.

“I have four grandchildren,” Burks said. “I plan to just have fun with them, go where I please, get up when I please, work the crossword puzzle and drink my coffee — just whatever I want to do — and shop.”

Self said he has announced his plans not to seek a second term as commissioner so others could run for the office. So far, Bob Burnett is the only person to file as a candidate.

“I have other plans for what I want to do in my future,” Self said. “I cannot announce them without stepping down.”

The Texas Constitution says some elected officials, such as county commissioners, must step down if they declare candidacy for another office with more than a year left in the current term.

Self said he has things he would like to do as commissioner, which keeps him from commenting on speculation he plans to seek the county judge’s office. Any such comments will have to wait until after the first of the year, he said. Self, a former Rockwall mayor and county treasurer, is in his first term as commissioner.

“I have a lot of things I have promised to do as county commissioner,” he said. “I’m working on the library project. I’m working on the roads project. There’s a lot of work to be done this next year that if I stepped down, I wouldn’t be able to finish up.”
