EMORY — Royse City’s Lady Bulldogs almost ran the table, capturing 14 of the 17 events to run away with the District 10-3A girls track and field title on Friday at Wildcat Stadium.
The Royse City Bulldogs also claimed the boys team title after winning five events.
Led by sprinter-long jumper Megan Frausto and hurdler-high jumper Skyler Strahm, the Lady Bulldogs outdistanced the six-team girls field with their winning total of 232 points. Royse City won all but the shot put, discus and 200-meter dash. Wills Point was second with 140, followed by Rains (101), Community (72), Commerce (41) and Quinlan Ford (32).
Frausto, the defending state champion in the 400-meter dash, pulled off a tough middle distance double in winning the 800-meter run (2:18.17) and 400-meter dash (1:00.22). Teammate Jennifer Null, who also won the 1600 at 5:45.13, pushed Frausto hard in the 800, falling by only a tenth of a second. Frausto won the 400 by more than four seconds over teammate Autumn Landers.
Frausto also won the long jump with a leap of 17-3 1/4 and anchored the Lady Bulldogs’ victorious 4x400 team that clocked a 4:18.23. Strahm and Landers joined Frausto and Alex Lopez-Rogina on that team.
Strahm won the high jump, clearing 5-4, plus doubled in the hurdles, taking the 100 with a 16.54 and the 300, nosing out Megan Neagle of Rains with a 50.20 time.
Raven Alexander of Royse City captured the 100-meter dash (13.36) and anchored Royse City’s 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams to victories in the times of 49.71 and 1:47.85.
Alex Lopez-Rogina turned in unselfish duty for the Lady Bulldogs, running leadoff leg on all three victorious relay teams, plus captured the triple jump (33-4 1/4).
Charvia Bell cleared 10 feet under windy conditions to claim the pole vault for Royse City.
Lacy Haren also won the 3200-meter run (13:11.29).
Kara Hoover of host Rains claimed the discus title (113-4) and Shawn Simmons from Quinlan Ford captured the shot put with a heave of 35-1 1/2.
Commerce’s Laci Brewer was a district champion in the 200 (28.14).
Royse City athletic director Greg Strahm, who’s also been coaching girls track and field, was no doubt proud of the Lady Bulldogs’ district title but is looking ahead.
“We’ve got a bigger picture in mind with the region results from last year,” said Strahm, whose Lady Bulldogs tied for the Region II-3A title last year in Commerce.
Strahm wants the Lady Bulldogs to shoot for the region team title in a couple of weeks at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
“You can tell that’s kind of their goal,” he said.
Royse City’s Bulldogs won two relays and finished second in the other on the way to the boys team title with 161 points. Wills Point, led by its distance runners who went one-two-three in two races, was second with 138, followed by Quinlan Ford (101), Community (86), Rains (82) and Commerce (48).
“This was a great meet for the guys,” said Bulldog coach Jason Johnson. “They stepped up. When it’s time to compete these guys really step it up.”
Richard Morrison, B.J. Farrar, Trevor White and Justin Rogers of Royse City took the 4x200 (1:32.71), while Morrison, Farrar and Rogers joined Brian Irby on the Bulldogs’ victorious 4x200 relay (1:32.71).
Royse City claimed two field event titles with Chris Smith in the high jump (6-4) and Luke Beck in the pole vault (13-6) and B.J. Farrar of Royse City won the 200 with a 23.15 into a brisk wind.
Commerce sprinter Terrence Hawkins doubled with wins in the 100 (11.66) and 400 (52.06). The 100 was a photo finish as Richards Williams of Quinlan Ford and Tim Underwood of Community were also awarded the same time of 11.66 and fourth-place finisher Morrison from Royse City was clocked at 11.67 on the automatic timer.
Host Rains won the 4x100 relay (44.53) and also picked up victories from Taylor Marshall in the 110-meter hurdles (16.04) and Montrea Hobbs in the long jump (20-5 1/2).
Jesse Johns of Quinlan Ford won the 300 hurdles with a 42.21 and his teammate Skyler Pruitt tossed the shot 44-5 1/2 to finish first.
Jonathon Ortiz of Community was also a district champion in the discus (134-10).
