Stealing a slide home on a non-swing in the bottom of the seventh, Scotty Arterberry capped off the five-run run in the bottom of the seventh to give Royse City the win over Wills Point 10-9 April 15 at home.
It was a much different one-run game at Quinlan-Ford, April 18, where the Panthers won 4-3 taking advantage of Royse City’s mistakes, which Coach Clay Wolfe said were uncharacteristic.
As of press-time, the Rains Wildcats and the ’Dawgs, are battling for first and second in district at Bulldog Stadium, with the winner getting a bye in the first-round of playoffs.
At home against Wills Point, Angel Hernandez’ great tag-out at third, bracketed by two strike-outs by Richard Morrison, ended the Tiger line-up at-bats which included walks, fielders choice and two singles, resulting in five runs as the top of the third ended. Royse City’s two runs in the bottom, made the score Wills Point 5, Royse City 4.
Neither team scored in the fourth.
In the fifth, Wills Point scored two on a double by Ellis. With the bases loaded and one out, the Bulldog shortstop Dalton McAden threw to catcher Chaz Quinn making the runner out at home, and Carlos Gallegos struck out the next batter.
Dylan Jones had an RBI in the bottom of the fifth, and entering the sixth inning, the score was Wills Point 7, Royse City 5.
The Tigers scored two in the sixth, and Royse City’s three batters went down, leaving the score Wills Point 9, Royse City 5.
Though the Tigers Bodin hit a double, the other three in the order struck out or were caught.
Gallegos and Scot Lane each got on base on errors, Cameron Nichols on a walk, and Jacob Stone hit an RBI on a sacrifice single. Arterberry’s single brought in Lane and Nichols, before he came in on McAden’s at-bat to end the game, 10-9.
Each team used three pitchers. Royse City’s Morrison, Gallegos and Lane allowed six hits and only three earned runs, and Wills Point allowed five hits and had seven earned runs.
At Quinlan, Nichols and Lane pitched, allowing no earned runs.
“Quinlan always plays us tough. It doesn’t matter if they are good or bad, they are always goanna play us tough,” Wolfe said.
