Royse City’s playoff run ended in Lake Dallas after two games against the Lake Worth Bullfrogs.
Game one of the Area Playoffs for the Bulldogs was played at Lake Dallas High School Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
On the Mound for the Bulldogs was Scott Lane and he pitched six and two third innings. Lane appeared to be in rare form again by sitting down the first three Lake Worth Bullfrog batters, with the assistance of third basemen Angel Hernandez and short stop Jacob Stone making the first and second out of the inning. Lane struck out the third batter for out number three of the first inning. The rest of the night the Bullfrogs scored six of the seven runs on Lane.
In the sixth inning, with two outs and one on base, Carlos Gallegos was called on to finish the game. With an overthrow at first base which was an error on the fielder would allow Tyler Duncan to score for a 7-4 lead. Gallegos then sat down the next four batters.
The Bulldogs appeared to be picking up where they left off last week with their bats in game one of a three game series with the Lake Worth Bullfrogs. Scotty Arterberry walked, Richard Morrison and Gallegos singled, and with bases loaded Chaz Quinn was up and given the sign for a sacrifice bunt with Arterberry on third. Although the bunt was between the first baseman and pitcher to allow everyone to be safe the pitcher Matt Harmon balked and this made the play dead and advanced the runners on base scoring Arterberry.
The very next pitch Morrison scored on a wild pitch from Harmon. Then with Gallegos on third Quinn hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield allowing Gallegos to tag up and score for a 3-0 lead.
Harmon would then settle in and strike out the next three batters. The fourth batter, which was Jacob Stone hit a deep shot to the outfield in the right center gap allowing him to untilize his speed to get a triple. The Bulldogs’ bat went dead the rest of the night with Matt Harmon striking out 11 batters, and allowing eight hits. One of them was a solo home run from Cameron Nichols and Quinn would single in the seventh inning to score the final run for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs lost 7-5.
Carlos Gallegos took the mound again for the Bulldogs in the second game, and picked up where he left off the night before with striking out the first, third and fourth batter in the first inning. In the second inning the first batter hit the ball hard to Stone who made a great play on the ball, but could not get the out. The next batter would bunt the ball back to Gallegos and he would field the ball on the first base line then out run the batter to first for an un-assisted out. The next batter Brannon Riley singled with an RBI for the first score of the game then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
With one out, the next batter hit a deep shot to right center field which was caught by Morrison. Quinn saw the Lake Worth coach give Riley the signal to advance from second to home and called for the ball from Morrison. Morrison made the throw home and Quinn made the tag for the out on Riley. Riley was then ejected for lowering his shoulder and running through Quinn. The Bulldogs and Gallegos would not allow anymore runs until the fifth inning, then with an error, a couple of singles, and a couple of wild pitches the Bullfrogs would score three runs.
Wolfe called on Morrison to close out the inning. Morrison did that by striking out Chris Patino and not allow any runs the rest of the game.
On the mound for the Bullfrogs in pitching a complete game was a strong left-hander by the name of Justin Campos. Campos faced 28 batters striking out 13 of them. Campos allowed hits and three of them were doubles by Quinn in second inning, Scott Lane in the fourth inning and Scotty Arterberry in the fifth inning. Campos allowed two singles by Dylan Jones and Jacob Stone in the seventh inning. Campos came away with the win of 4-0.
After the Game Coach Clay Wolfe expressed his graditude to his players for playing so well together and expressing that this was the best team he had ever coached. The Bulldogs will be facing some powerhouses from 4A; Highland Park, Rockwall-Heath and Richardson Pearce. Also on the schedule are 5A schools that have moved down to 4A like Rockwall, Newman Smith, and R.L. Turner.
