October is a month to wear purple in an effort to raise awareness against domestic violence.
Women In Need, WIN, which operates the domestic violence shelter for Rockwall and Hunt counties, is also offering vigils in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in support of those who have experienced the specter of violence, as well as luncheons to thank the first responders and others in both counties who deal with the issues every day.
WIN hosted the Rockwall County Domestic Violence Vigil at 9 a.m. Friday on the steps of the Rockwall County Courthouse, 1111 West Yellow Jacket Lane in Rockwall. The vigil remembered victims and celebrated survivors and featured guest speakers and survivor testimony. The vigil was followed by a luncheon at Liberty Hall for survivors, volunteers and first responders.
A Domestic Violence Awareness Month vigil is scheduled at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 at the Hunt County Courthouse, which will be followed by the luncheon at 11 a.m. at the Emerald Ballroom at Landon Winery.
The luncheons are free for all those attending, but an RSVP is requested to allow for an accurate head count.
