The Royse City Planning and Zoning Commission has approved BHP Water Supply Corporation’s request to rezone a five-acre site on FM 35 — across from Fort Elementary School — from single-family to commercial.

BHP President G.W. Peoples said an office and equipment building will be constructed on the site at 2812 FM 35. He said there will be one building on the site. Part of the building will be used for water corporation offices and the rest will be used for equipment storage.

The planning and zoning commission’s approval advances as a recommendation to the city council. The city council was scheduled to consider approving the zone change request at its Tuesday night meeting.

Janet McPherson, director of development and community services for the city, said the project will have to go back before the planning and zoning commission for a specific use permit.

Among other business, the planning and zoning commission also recommended approval of a specific use permit for a restaurant with alcohol sales at 146 E. Main St.

According to city officials, the application was filed by owners of Main Street Cafe and Grill, formerly Mariscos Del Golfo.
