Doug Fulwood

Doug Fulwood is the Royse City Independent School District’s new director of bands.

Royse City school board members voted to hire Fulwood during their Monday night meeting and  he is expected to begin his new duties in April.

Fulwood has been a band director about 13 years.

He is currently the director of bands for Bastrop ISD. Fulwood said this is his first year in Bastrop and he will finish his commitment there through the third week in April.

Previously, he served nine years as director of bands for Decatur ISD. His first band position was assistant director for Devine ISD in 2000. He served there at one year, then Boyd ISD for two years before accepting the Decatur position.

Fulwood said he chose to leave Bastrop after only one year and accept the Royse City position to “get back closer to family.” His wife, Hope, is from Fairview in Collin County.

Fulwood said he sees Royse City as having “a tremendous amount of potential to have a top-notch band program.”

His bands, Fulwood said, have consistently won University Interscholastic League sweepstakes honors and other recognition.

Initially, he said, his Royse City duties will include communicating with parents and students to prepare for the marching season.

Fulwood added that he will talk with the school district’s other band directors to help determine the program’s current needs. Those visits, he said, will help determine his “next steps.”

The new director said he’s also excited about being a Bulldog.

“I was a Bulldog in high school and now I get to be a Bulldog in my work,” he said.

He’s a graduate of Wylie High School in Abilene. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Tarleton State University in Stephenville in May 2000.

The Fulwoods are the parents of one child — Emily, a sixth grader.

Shayne Canning, Royse City’s previous director of bands, recently was reassigned to new duties in the band program. He has been a band director for the school district since 2001. He was an assistant director until two years ago when he was promoted to director.

Jeff Webb, associate superintendent of human resources, said Canning’s new duties would be determined by the new director of bands.
