A Royse City business owner received a felony theft indictment for allegedly writing hot checks to buy more than 700 bales of hay.

Michael Don Smedley, 40, of Rowlett, was indicted on two counts of theft of property of the value of between $1,500 and $20,000 by check.

According to the indictments Smedley, the owner of FM 35 Feed in Royse City, wrote a check for $4,509 to a company known as Murrfield Farms on January 31, 2007, to pay for 668 square bales of hay and on March 15, Smedley wrote a check for $3,180 to the same company for 53 bales of hay.

Both checks were allegedly returned for insufficient funds and Smedley was reported to have been taken into custody on Nov. 19.
