Summer reading program returns
Rockwall County Library’s Adult Summer Reading program is back and more exciting than ever. The 2014 program, called Literary Elements, will offer an assortment of prizes. For the first time ever, participants will be able to select the prize they are hoping to win. Prizes include a golf package for four, a tour of AT&T Stadium, restaurant gift cards, a spa package, gift baskets and jewelry from a local store. The program encourages adults to read. Read and record five items on a reading log to enter the drawing. Turn in additional reading logs for additional chances to win a prize. The program runs through Aug. 9. Pumpkin Patch favorites available for order
Fans of the famous Pumpkin Patch pickles and jalapeno peppers can still order these delicacies, but must do so by Aug. 1. A pint of pickles is $7 and jalapenos are $6 for a half-pint. Cases can be ordered for $84 (pickles) or $70 (peppers). Place your order by calling 972-772-0752 or sending email to email@example.com. Orders will be picked up at the Rockwall County Library. No deliveries will be made.
Democratic men to meet Aug. 2
The Democratic Men’s Group of Rockwall County is holding its next luncheon on Aug. 2, at La Cocina del Tio Mon’s Tacqueria, 105 Kenway Rd., near downtown Rockwall. This group meets for lunch at noon on the first Saturday of each month to discuss local, state and national current events and politics. At this meeting we will discuss the humanitarian crisis at our southern border. We welcome open-minded, progressive men who are concerned about the future direction of Texas and Rockwall County.
Square dance lessons return in fall
The Rockwall Square Dance Club will be holding another series of square dance lessons this fall. Lessons will be held Tuesdays beginning Aug. 5 from 7:45 to 9:30 p.m. at The Center, 108 E. Washington. Lessons will continue through Dec. 16 and are $49 for city residents, $75 for all others. All ages are welcome and the first two lessons are free. Master Gardeners conference slated for Aug. 9
The Rockwall County Extension Leadership Advisory Board, along with the Rockwall County Extension Master Gardeners are hosting “Save Your Landscape for Better Days” – a conference on water solutions, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rockwall County Courthouse, 1111 E. Yellowjacket Lane. Businesses who wish to help sponsor the event are encouraged to contact the Rockwall County Extension Office at 972-204-7660. Sponsors will receive a space to showcase their business. The conference will offer solutions to homeowners on water management and care strategies for their landscapes under water restrictions.
STAR production to run Aug. 16-17
A few spots still remain for actors and volunteers in the STAR Theater modified production of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” which runs Aug. 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. at Rockwall Community Playhouse. The Special Theater At Rockwall (STAR) is in its third season and is a specialized program for people 16 and older with Down syndrome and autism. The two-week workshop rehearses Aug. 4-8 and Aug. 11-15 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Playhouse is located at 609 E. Rusk, Rockwall. The tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at the door. Community starts YOM program
All Lakeview Summit residents are encouraged to participate in the new Yard of the Month program. Four winners will be selected each month from May through August. Chosen properties will receive a gift card from either Covington’s or Martinez Lawn Care. Winners will also display a yard sign of recognition for one month.
Kiwanis Club holds weekly meetings
