Royse City's David Frye grabs a rebound during Tuesday's 69-67 loss in Greenville.

A pair of close losses over the past week did nothing to damage Royse City’s playoff positioning as the Bulldogs (12-9, 4-3) enter the second half of their District 13-4A schedule. Royse City currently sits third in the league standings, despite falling at Greenville on Tuesday and again at home against McKinney North on Friday night.

The Bulldogs faced a 39-34 halftime deficit in Greenville last Tuesday, but battled back to make it a 49-47 game entering the final period where both teams posted 20 points. Royse City’s Tre Hayes pumped in 22 points to lead all scorers and Jamie Briceno added 21. Dalton Warner had seven points and Michael Webb added 6 points. Three players reached double-figures for Greenville (9-12, 2-5), led by Jerry Dickerson with 15 points.

The Bulldogs fell behind early Friday to district-leader McKinney North (14-7, 6-1) and couldn’t fully recover, falling at home by a 68-58 count. Royse City trailed by 10 at halftime (32-22) and by the same deficit as the game entered the final frame. North got off to a hot start by posting a 20-13 advantage after the first period.

David Frye turned in a big scoring effort for the hosts with a game-high 21 points, while Hayes tossed in 13. Briceno added nine points for Royse City and Webb chipped in with eight. Collin Curran led three North players in double figures with 18 points.

This week, Royse City looks to end its current slide when it travels to last-place Denison (3-13, 1-4) on Tuesday night and plays host to the fourth-place Sherman Bearcats (13-15, 3-4) on Friday evening. The Bulldogs posted a 69-47 win over Denison in the first meeting between the two teams in December, and also won the first game against Sherman earlier this month.
