Although they jumped out to an early lead and then rallied to tie the score late, the Royse City Bulldogs couldn’t hold off a bottom-of-the-seventh surge by Sulphur Springs as they fell to the Wildcats 6-5 in their final District 13-4A game April 30 at SSHS.
The tough loss left the Bulldogs with a final 4-8 district mark, good enough for fifth place, and caps their season with a record of 9-17.
Royse City took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a three-run double by Marcielo Arredondo after the Bulldogs loaded the bases on a pair of walks by Mitchell Venhaus and Dylan Youngblood sandwiched around a single by Jared Jordan.
Sulphur Springs bounced back by scoring two runs in each of the third and fourth innings as well as single run in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-3 lead.
The Bulldogs then rallied in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 5-all on a sacrifice fly by Venhaus and a RBI-double by Jordan.
Sulphur Springs scored the winning run on Laine Anderson’s bases-loaded, walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Laine drove in Dallin Sant who led off the seventh with a single, moved to second on a walk and advanced to third on a hit batter.
Taylor Hearn was the losing pitcher for Royse City, surrendering six hits in a complete game performance.
Sant picked up the win for the Wildcats in relief of starter Jenner Jackson.
