The Royse City Bulldogs have now won three in a row if you count last season’s final victory over Lucas Lovejoy.

Last Friday’s 41-14 victory came at the expense of and on the home field of the Class 6A North Garland Raiders.

The Raiders met Bulldog tailback Dre Prox for the first time and won’t soon be forgetting him. Prox, a senior transfer from Kaufman, broke out for a 261-yard, four-touchdown performance that put opponents on notice that Royse City now has a new and powerful offensive weapon.

The Raiders scored on their first possession as Alex Garcia received a 29-yard touchdown pass with 7:04 to play in the first quarter. Carlos Vides kicked the PAT to give North Garland a 7-0 lead.

On the Bulldogs’ second possession they rambled 89 yards on just four plays, the last being a 73-yard touchdown run by Prox. The point after failed and the Raiders held onto a 7-6 lead.

Prox gave the Bulldogs the lead for good as he eased into the end zone from 7 yards out with 5:43 to play in the half.  This time Zayne Mendoza’s kick was perfect and the Bulldogs took a 13-6 lead.

The Bulldogs’ quick-strike offense again took only four plays on their next possession to drive 87 yards in just 1:24.  It was Prox on his third touchdown of the first half when he sprinted 40 yards up the middle for the Bulldog touchdown. The kick was good and the Bulldogs took a 20-7 lead with 2:24 to play in the first half.

North Garland scored its final points on a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Jones.  The kick was good and the Bulldogs hit halftime with a 20-14 lead.

The second half found the Bulldog defense making the needed adjustments and it was Elijah Yelverton’s night to shine.  Several sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery by the 6-foot-6 sophomore defensive end led to the ejection of a frustrated North Garland player.

Prox would open up the second half with an 80-yard touchdown run and the point after by Mendoza gave Royse City a 27-14 lead.

Junior defensive back Koby Cooper, who was one of several Bulldog defenders who turned in an exceptional football game against the Raiders, intercepted a pass to set up a short touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Tyson Oliver that made it 34-14 with 2:51 to play in the third quarter.

The Royse City defense also added the final touchdown of the game when sophomore defensive lineman Zamien Alexander stripped the ball from North Garland’s quarterback at the Raider 20 yard line. Alexander scampered in for a 20-yard touchdown to add the icing to the cake for the Bulldogs.

Royse City will host the Waco Connally Cadets Friday at Royse City ISD Stadium in this year’s home opener.  Kickoff will be at 7:30.

Offensive player of the week:

Senior Dre Prox had his breakout game of the season with a 261-yard, four-touchdown performance.  With touchdown runs of 73, 40, 80 and 7 yards, Prox added that extra weapon of breakaway speed that the Bulldogs have needed.

Defensive players of the week:

Sophomores DE Elijah Yelverton and Junior DB Koby Cooper.

Yelverton had three sacks, a caused fumble and a fumble recovery.  Koby Cooper played like the shutdown corner that the Bulldogs have long needed.  He also caused a fumble, intercepted a pass and broke up numerous pass attempts as well shutting down the Raiders’ sweep plays.
