It was the first home game of the season for the Royse City Bulldogs and it was a packed house with Youth Football Night also on the agenda.
The Bulldogs did not disappoint as the improved Royse City team continued its undefeated season with a 23-8 victory over the Waco Connally Cadets.
The Bulldog defense continued to shine as they did not allow the Cadets to score a touchdown during the contest, but it was the Bulldog offense that put the first points on the board as quarterback Matthew Yelverton threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Dre Prox. Zayne Mendoza added the PAT and Royse City took a 7-0 lead with 5:47 to play in the first quarter.
Near the end of the quarter, a high snap over the Bulldog punter went out of the end zone to give the Cadets a safety and the scoreboard read 7-2.
Neither team moved the ball with any consistency in the second period. Royse City did manage an 11 play, 73-yard drive capped off by a 19-yard field goal by Mendoza with 3:18 to play in the half.
The Cadets would score the only points in the third period on a 26-yard field goal by Gerardo Bazaldua.
Royse City missed a 23-yard field goal attempt before the period ended, and Waco Connally connected on another field goal by Bazaldua from 39 yards out with 7:49 to play in the game. The gap closed to 10-8, with penalty flags kept both offenses at bay.
With just two minutes to play in the game, the Bulldog defense helped put the clinching points on the board.
Defensive back Walter Porter intercepted a pass and returned it to the Connally 8 yard line. On the next play, Bryce Martinez ran the ball in for a touchdown. The extra point kick was good by Thomas Marinaro with 1:54 to play.
Following the kickoff, Royse City’s Kris Jones intercepted another Cadet pass and took it in for a 27-yard touchdown just 8 seconds after the Bulldogs’ previous TD. The point after kick however failed and the final score was 23-8 as Connally failed to move the ball again.
An interesting stat for the Bulldogs is the defense has scored a touchdown in every game this season.
This week will be of threefold importance to the hometown Bulldogs.
This Friday’s district opener at RCISD Stadium will match two 3-0 teams, the Bulldogs and the West Mesquite Wranglers. Royse City High School will also honor its 1966-67 district champion team and that graduating class’s 50th anniversary. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
