The most recent week of district basketball action was a rough one for Royse City High School teams, as each dropped a pair of 12-5A contests to Rockwall-Heath and West Mesquite last Tuesday and Friday.
On Friday, the Bulldogs suffered a 62-52 setback against the Wranglers while the Lady Bulldogs were defeated by a 66-37 margin.
Joseph Steffen pumped in a game-high 29 points for RCHS, but no other Bulldog had more than eight points. Devante Alexander scored eight points while pulling down 16 rebounds.
In the girls’ game, Belle Munoz led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points while Alexus Wanton added 10. Four West Mesquite players reached double figures as the Lady Wranglers jumped out to a 14-2 lead and 32-15 halftime advantage. The Lady Bulldogs faced a 55-27 advantage heading into the final period.
Last Tuesday (Jan. 13), the Bulldogs fell to 10th-ranked and undefeated Rockwall-Heath by a 69-45 score, despite 15 from Steffen, who again was the only player to reach double figures for the Bulldogs.
Alexander added eight points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs also committed 28 turnovers in the game.
Royse City’s girls held a 27-26 halftime lead against Heath, but struggled to score in the second half of a 60-42 loss.
Wanton led the team with 12 points and Daryn McMinn added 10.
Melanie Sumrow had nine points. Heath’s Katie Webster led all scorers with 22 and Nicole Gleason added 13.
Heath outscored Royse City 21-12 in the third frame and 13-3 in the final quarter.
Royse City teams faced Forney during Tuesday’s district action, but results were not available at press time.
The Bulldogs will host North Forney on Friday night, while the girls play at North Forney High School.
