Royse City sports highlights:
The Lady Bulldogs (19-7-1) drummed up some momentum for the playoffs with two lopsided wins last week, securing the No. 3 seed in District 15-5A.
On Tuesday, Royse City won at Highland Park, 14-1, with Kenzee Hessert and Mattie Atkins each contributing three hits and three RBI. In Friday night’s home district closer vs. Lucas Lovejoy, Abby Thomas pitched a four-inning shutout, striking out seven. Hessert had three more hits and five RBI with Madison Doherty adding three hits and three RBI.
The ‘Dogs completed their regular season Monday with home wins over Mount Vernon (4-3) and Canton (6-0).
The first playoff opponent for coach Lee Kuyrkendall’s girls will be Hallsville, the No. 2 seed in District 16-5A. A three-game series will open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Hallsville with Game 2 at 6:30 Friday night at Royse City. A third game, if needed, will be played at noon on Saturday at Sulphur Springs.
TRACK & FIELD
Royse City advanced three relays — two girls’ and one boys’ — plus three individuals (all girls) to the this weekend’s regional track meet at last week’s area-round meet at Longview Pine Tree.
The Bulldogs’ top performer was Kayla Hutchins, who took the girls’ triple jump with a leap of 39-11.5 inches and also qualified with a fourth-place finish in the long jump. Kayla Deal qualified in both the 400 meters and the high jump and also ran the leadoff on both qualifying girls’ relays.
Only the top four area-round finishers in each event will participate in the regionals, which take place Friday and Saturday at UT-Arlington.

The Bulldogs (7-5, 19-12) split a pair of one-run games with Highland Park last week, winning 6-5 in eight innings at home on Tuesday and losing, 2-1, on Friday at HP.
A game-winning hit by Hunter Tullis gave RCHS its Tuesday win. On Friday, Royse City managed seven hits to Highland Park’s two, but trailed for the duration after the Scots plated two first-inning runs. Drayton Harris pitched a complete game, striking out five, while Joshua Hendricks led the Bulldogs’ offense with a pair of hits.
RCHS closes its regular season this week against Lovejoy. A road game on Tuesday will be followed by a 7:30 home game Friday night which will include senior recognition ceremonies.
A win in just one of the games vs. fifth-place Lovejoy (6-6, 16-12) would clinch a playoff spot for RCHS, which retains the possibility of tying Highland Park (9-3, 13-12) and/or Wylie East (9-3, 18-5-1) for third place. HP and Wylie East meet twice this week. Forney (10-2, 16-9-1) has the district lead going into the final week.
Bulldog senior Grayson Elder signed Tuesday with Division III Austin College in Sherman. The Kangaroos posted a 3-7 record in 2017.
